Swan, Stand Your Ground

Once upon a time, I lived right in the heart of a busy city. Parking spaces were scarce, especially on weekends. From my upstairs window, I watched the little cars circle below, greedily eyeing any empty spot that appeared.
But one of those much-desired parking spaces was already claimed. By a swan.
Perhaps he simply enjoyed the warmth of the sun-soaked stones. Or maybe he was just exercising his right to a piece of pavement by the water. Who could blame him?

Of course, many drivers disagreed. In their big shiny cars, they cruised up and down the street, believing themselves lucky to find a free space, until they saw why it was free: a stubborn swan who refused to move.
One by one, they were forced to admit defeat. From my window, teacup in hand, I watched them drive away in frustration. I couldn’t help but enjoy this little theater of nature versus culture.
The outcome was never in doubt. The swan always won.

Until one day, a small, fiery car pulled up, driven by an equally fiery woman. She too spotted her chance, and just like all before her, ran into feathered resistance. But this time something was different. Instead of backing off, her determination flared.
To her credit, her driving skills were impeccable. With infinite patience, tiny steering adjustments, and impressive perseverance, she managed to squeeze her car neatly into the space, right next to a now visibly irritated swan.

From my window, I could practically see her self-satisfied smile. There was only one thing left to do: step out of the car. Had this been a Disney movie, the camera would now zoom in on the swan’s face, showing the faintest hint of a smug grin. “Go ahead,” he seemed to say, leaning his great white body casually against her door.
Seconds later, the little car shot backward, speeding away in a cloud of indignation until it was nothing but a dot on the horizon.
