Chronically Happy

Seals must have been standing at the back of the line when legs, tails, and ears were handed out. It looks just like a furry larva, decorated with two huge black eyes and a pair of tiny winglets.
Luckily, this apparent lack of limbs doesn’t bother them one bit. On the contrary: seals seem utterly carefree. They are chronic optimists. Rain, hail, storm, snow, or freezing cold, it doesn’t matter. Grinning, they roll through the sand and wave at the camera with their adorable little… flippers. Every now and then, they throw in a huge yawn, as if sandblasting themselves from the inside.

Wishful thinking
Watching them, I fully understand why lonely sailors once mistook them for mermaids. Just look at those deep black eyes, that voluptuous body, that inviting smile. After months alone at sea, this radiant beach siren must have felt like salvation.
I get it. I want one, too. Just imagine one next to you on the couch during a Netflix binge, or serving as a fluffy pillow at night.

Being a Seal
Seals are the ultimate connoisseurs of joy, and smile might as well be their middle name. Even just looking at them makes me forget every single grain of sand that’s burying me alive as I lie on the beach to photograph them. With the little vision I have left, I watch this creature, shining like the happiest sand sculpture in the world.
I don’t want to own a seal. I want to be a seal.

Seal fun fact
Maybe you remember I wrote about Ducks & Dog masks? Well… Seals have something similar, they actually have -I kid you not- heart-shaped noses!
