Silhouettes represent the ultimate art of simplicity. Colours, shades and details fade and with them, all the visual clutter disappears. Distracting twigs, messy leaves, the entire scene is swallowed by deep black. All that remains is the soft glow of a sunrise or sunset, casting strength and contrast around the silhouetted shape.
Guessing Games
As the complexity dissolves, only a few simple clues remain, like a child’s visual riddle. If it has antlers, it must be a deer. A furry body with a pointed snout? Clearly a fox. Branches? Most likely a tree. And if it’s unclear? Well… it’s either a bad photo — or an intriguing Rorschach test.
Back to the Essence
These outlines have to really nail the essence of the subject, like some kind of archetypal shapes. That’s why I love playing with beautiful sunrises and sunsets and silhouettes: they force you to go back to the basics.
In a world growing ever more complex, a bit of bold, unambiguous simplicity can be a welcome relief, don’t you think?
