Hummingbird in my Ear
Hummingbirds – like dragonflies – seem to have fluttered straight out of a fairy-tale. So breathtakingly beautiful that even the most gifted designer couldn’t improve them. Perfection in miniature edition and yet so incredibly powerful!

I was already hopelessly in love with these enchanting creatures, but then…
…I visited this idyllic place in Costa Rica, where lunch was accompanied by hummingbirds darting back and forth between the feeders. Best dinner show ever. A bit hard to focus on your food, though!

Suddenly, I heard a strange woosh next to my ear.
I turned my head and there she was: the most adorable fluttering being, hovering right beside me. Almost in my ear. For a second I honestly thought she might’ve mistaken it for a feeder.
I looked at her. She looked at me.
Then this magical creature telepathically transmitted:
“Hey human. My feeder is empty! Please fix that. I’m sooo hungryyyy!”

So, I did as she asked, poured in some fresh sugar water, and made one mini bird very happy.
Every now and then, I’d feel another gentle gust of wind by my ear, gaze into those sparkling little eyes, and refill her drink.
In that moment, the rest of the world disappeared.
It was just me and that tiny fairy.
Some people need to see Naples before they die.
For me, it was a hummingbird in my ear.
Happiness, wrapped in feathers.
PS. Did you know that the Magenta-throated woodstar (below) is also known as yhe Costa Rican forest elf! Apparently, I’m not the only one who believes in fairy tales!
