The Rut

Imagine a dark forest, and as you go deeper into the woods, the roaring, or rather, bellowing, gets louder. It’s the sound of fallow deer during the rut, who have come together en masse to fight.

In this moment, the atmosphere in the forest is charged, to say the least. Even if you didn’t feel the tension, you could smell it. In fact, even the birds hold their breath. Gradually, the sun brings some shape to the darkness, filtering through the trees and the morning mist. Meanwhile, more and more deer enter the scene.

Steaming Stags

By now, some males are exhausted after a long, wild night. If you look closely, you can even see the clouds of breath coming from their mouths. On the other hand, other males are already preparing for the next round of fighting.

They defend their rutting hole with roars and snorts. As soon as another male dares to come near, the antlers clash and the earth flies around. In other words, the show has begun!

Photogenic Fallow Deer

Of course, there are so many fallow moments besides the rut that are wonderful to witness. For example, enjoy my fallow deer in the snow, or my cute newborn fawns. Fallow deer in a beautiful autumn scene. On top of that, imagine them walking through a frosted field on a misty morning, silhouetted by a glowing sunset.

Conversely, picture them on a scorching hot late afternoon, surrounded by mosquitoes. Sometimes, it’s just a beautiful portrait of a fallow deer buck gazing into the camera, or lazily standing in a quiet summer forest.

All in all, foxes may still be my main focus, but these beauties surely deserve to be caught in pixels as well! So, enjoy my deer photography!
