On one of the last winter days some colleague photographers and I plotted our new challenge: finding Blue Frogs.
The rumour goes that for just a few days a year the male Moor frog dresses completely blue in order to seduce them frog ladies.
So it’s just a matter of being at the right place at the right time.
Simple as that. (…)
On this beautiful but really cold morning we started our Blue Mission.
No moor frog in sight, let alone a blue one, but an enormous amount of common toads.
And what a pretty sight is that: a fatty toad woman with a skinny male on her back just hanging lazily in the water to (I assume) reproduce…
Never before had I realized how beautiful this rather plumb creatures really are, with their eyes like a beautiful sunrise.
Toads aren’t shy at all, so if you gently approach them, you can easily witness their love games.
Not entirely without risk, though, since toads -with their one track mind- have just one rule: Get what you can Get!
And whether this is an attractive lady toad, a frog, a tripod leg or a human ankle, they couldn’t care less.
Everything is embraced just as greedily, and believe me…It’s pretty hard to release yourself once grabbed..:D
Somewhat unexpectedly, we found our first moor frog in the afternoon.
Although Moor frogs, as befits all frogs, are very shy, we found a very cooperative one that tempted us to go just a little further.
Within five minutes he had us on our knees.
Within ten minutes the first garments were taken off and in less than a quarter he had managed to get three women at frog level.
At the end of the day we were just as wet as the frog.
And a whole lot bluer. (Boy, was it cold!)
But even so, I can’t think of a better way to say goodbye to winter and welcome a new spring….
Apparently that is what photography does to you.
That’s to say….with female photographers.
The only male photographer wisely stayed dry and had the best of times watching a bunch of mud crawling women.
He must have been surprised how easy a small frog managed to get three women undressed…;)
Maybe we just believe in fairy tales a little more? : P
