From Registration to Pure Creation
Maybe it’s just the natural path of a creative mind. You start by capturing your subject as accurately as possible, but over time, you crave more space. You want to escape the rigid framework. And especially in nature photography, there are so many do-nots and should-nots.
While I still love to capture a beautiful animal in all its natural beauty, I also love to play. With backlight, positioning, blur, color, reflections – maybe even with vintage lenses, someday.
The New Freedom
The beauty of abstract nature photography is that suddenly, all those rules fall away, opening the door to endless freedom. Perfect focus? Overrated. Proper exposure? Optional. The only real requirement is: you doing you.
Of course, it’s a bonus if the end result resonates. And no, it’s not just a matter of shaking your camera and hoping for magic. Even abstract photography needs a certain sense of balance, rhythm, and visual appeal. A weak composition is still a weak image.
But the fun part? ‘Bad’ results are totally fine, as long as you’re enjoying the ride.

Happily Surprised
One of the joys of this creative freedom is the surprise factor. Take a spider web, for instance. When you’re up close, every millimeter of movement reveals a completely new world. It’s like receiving digital gifts, minute after minute.
Or imagine photographing birds with a slow shutter speed, as they fly through your frame, they leave the most unexpected trails, like a living Rorschach test.

Your Spin
But abstraction isn’t just about fancy techniques like ICM or double exposures. It’s about how you look at the world. It’s the way you frame a fragment of reality, put your own spin on it, and click… until something inside you says: yes, this is it.

FAQ | Abstract nature photography by Roeselien Raimond
What appeals to you so much about abstract nature photography?
Unlike traditional photography, abstract photography offers endless freedom. You’re no longer bound by rules or the obligation to capture things exactly as they are. You can play, experiment, and above all, infuse your work with a piece of yourself and your emotions. That space for a combination of self-expression and adventure is amazing!
What is abstract nature photography?
It’s a way of seeing beyond the literal, focusing on shapes, light, color, and feeling rather than clear subjects.
Why create abstract images of nature?
Abstraction allows space for interpretation, inviting the viewer, but me as well, to experience rather than just recognize.
Are these images edited or created in-camera?
They are all real, authentic photographs. Most of the atmosphere comes from light, movement, and perspective at the moment of capture and slightly edited to enhance contrast and colors.
What should I look for in abstract photography?
There is no fixed answer. It’s about what you feel, notice, or recognize within the image.
How does abstraction relate to mindfulness?
It encourages slowing down and observing without immediately labeling or judging.
Do these images have a specific meaning?
For me: absolutely! And for you? : )
